If you don't support this sort of behavior, shop elsewhere.
Now, as for the reactionary lamentations around her occasional brashness, don't bring your coffee, beer, five year-olds or vomit near thirteen thousand dollar originals. Any gallery owner will tell you beverages and art don't mix.
Rude, cruel monster who has no concept of how to treat others. Nasty to anyone with the misfortune of stepping into the shop. The mediocre tourist art doesn't excuse her behavior at all, and this shop bizarrely glorifies a racist past. The proprietor is proud to hold a trademark and own the rights to Madame Lalaurie and oddly treats the historical figure as if she's her own.
Most rude person we have ever met!! I am a history major and this lady has no idea about history. Keep moving if you want a positive experience....
When I suggested to her that perhaps she should take the sign out of the window, she laughed and stated she would never take down that sign. My feeling was I was lured in by false advertising (she obviously knows she has no posters, and yet keeps advertising!), and I left immediately.
I entered Galery Nine Forty because they have a sign out front declaring "Official Hurricane Katrina Poster," and I was curious to see what this possibly could be. When I asked, the owner told me that it was sold out, and had been sold out for a long time.
If you want anodyne, ego-coddling, politically correct customer service, then you might want keep on walking.
I have no time to waste in businesses that employ these tactics. I spend plenty in New Orleans, but not one cent at Gallery Nine Forty.
Two friends of mine (we all live here in New Orleans) were walking past and discussing the art on display in the window amongst themselves. One was black, one white, and the art depicted black people in a "stereotypical" fashion, as befitting its age.
Love this gallery. Bought 5 pieces - ranging from gorgeous to hilarious - all of which were expertly packed.
My friends were speaking sotto voce, but the gallery owner overheard them and confronted them with angry words, including the "N" word, right there on the street, having misunderstood the nature of their conversation.
An embarrassment to our beloved city. Avoid at all costs.
I enjoy talking to Cyndy - she's part of the reason I try to duck in on my visits. A colorful, elusive local fixture and master storyteller, Cyndy offers more than just art for sale, but also a window into the history and local lore of New Orleans.
