This is an iconic stop - surely. The Sazerac was strong, so make sure you like whiskey! The Ramos Gin Fizz was phenomenal. The prices are high, but make the stop for a drink. We went in the afternoon on. Sunday. The bar was mellow - although there was a steady stream of coming g and going.
The bar is beautiful. Large open space, old wood, friendly staff. Yelp said they make the best Ramos Gin Fizz. I tried and it indeed was excellent. Great blend of flavors: Gin, egg whites, cream, but slightly too sweet for my taste. I think a better deal can be had at the Carousel. The prices here are what make my downvote this bar. I don't think it has all that much extra to garner the cocktail prices.
We ordered 2 non-alcoholic drinks and I'm sure they didn't cost $15 each. Sitting in a room of 3 white couples and 2 white bartenders, and not receiving any type of help, it was pretty obvious that we were un-welcomed guest.
I stayed at the Waldorf for my birthday and decided to get a drink since the cafe and lounge were both closed. My boyfriend and I walked in and sat at the bar. There were 2 bartenders. After about 15 minutes neither of them approached us, even though the room was relatively empty. Finally after another few minutes I decided to be more aggressive in getting their attention. I said "excuse me, we'd like some help." And one of the bartenders came over. We asked for our drinks and as he brought them over he asked if we wanted to pay for them or open a tab. My boyfriend gave him $30 and he never came back to bring us change or offer any additional service. We felt discriminated against. We didn't receive the same treatment as the other 3 couples at the bar. The bartenders talked to them, gave them attention and served them complimentary nuts. I wish I didn't go into the bar so that I never had to experience the rudeness and racism.
Great, old school cocktail bar with excellent service and professional bartenders. Dark and clubby, it had a beautiful look and cozy atmosphere. And you pay for that. If it wasn't for the prices, this might be my local!
Excellent namesake drink. Great atmosphere with a jazz ensemble. Upscale.
