We went on a Saturday when nothing was going on. Nothing to do but watch the ducks and look at the nice statues. Groups of people were drinking and smoking weed.... not exactly inviting to bring a kid there.
It's a nice place, pretty peaceful and not far from the hubbub. The water is a little dirty, with some debris and trash thrown in it. The water fountains have low pressure but do function, anyhow. Pretty artwork.
Armstrong Park is a small peace of Heaven in the CBD (Central Business District). The Mahalia Jackson theater sits in the park and the performances there are always beautiful. There are also cultural festivals held in the park that tend to give you a deeper understanding of the true story of what it is to be a New Orleanian!
Most of the gates other than the main one are locked so it's hard to get in and out. It was a wet day when we visited so it was pretty quite, but it did not feel like a safe place so we did a quick walk around and left! The park looks pretty run down and there is some construction on the bridge so that was closed. I would not bother to visit this park again. Give it a miss if you are time poor or not in the area - at least until it has been tidied up a bit.
Great park with great cultural roots. Wonderful sculptures and beautiful water features. Lots of great events happen here.
